How does "faith" relate to the UU principles, or to being a UU? I invite others to discuss their thoughts on this.

Faith can fit in Faith is as simple as believing in yourself For example: I have faith in myself that I can get through the class I am taking. You can have faith in the principles because you believe in them and what they stand for

When I first read the post that Elroy made... to be honest I cringed. I then went and looked up the definition of the word faith. faith noun 1. complete trust or confidence in someone or something. After reading this I still have doubts that i have "faith" in any one thing or person. A word that I have recently adopted into my vocabulary is "hope". Now when you ask do i have hope in the UU principles i can whole heartedly say YES.

In the last UU church I was involved in (Thoreau in Houston), we had the habit of putting "in faith" as a closing salutation on our emails. At UFM, we don't seem to use closing salutations, and I must say that I miss it. Another we used occasionally was "namaste." For those interested, I'll let you Google this one. Also, I just did a Google search on the UUA.ORG site for the word "faith," and got 8,890 web page hits, many of them using it in the context of "... our faith ..."
So what is our faith? For me, it primarily arises from the principles. I have faith in the inherent worth and dignity of each person. I have faith that the democratic process is the most peaceful and just way to make decisions. I have faith that respect for the interdependent web of all existence (as opposed to some assumed superiority over it) is the best way to live our lives. I have faith that, with whatever time I have left on Earth, I can make a positive difference for humanity and all existence.
I would be VERY interested to hear what other UUs have faith in.
Regards (that's innocuous enough, isn't it?), Elroy

Elroy, As I have said many times, and will say again "I love hearing your point of view on things". I understand where you are coming from when you use the word "Faith". I myself do not find comfort in that word as I said earlier. I believe that it is just a different synonym in my eyes. I also agree that I have full "Hope" in all of the principles that you have listed above. I just believe that "Faith" leaves no room for question... ( everything I have said is just my opinion, and I hope that it will be taken with a grain of salt). Questioning is the basis of my spirituality at this point in my life. I also believe that Rationality and Questioning are some that ground work for our religion. I hope that I have not to offend anyone with what I have said.
P.s. Namasté is one of my favorite salutations.
Namasté Rychi

So what do you do when you run out of faith? When you exist for the sake of existing? Nothing motivates you, and you pray for release?
